May 26: Bari
I was anticipating a grand train ride through the center of Italy, through hills and mountain passes, cruising by old villages and abandoned villas, and maybe there was a lot of that but I forgot one thing about European train travel: Often, train tracks are built in recesses that shield them from view (as well as riders from the view). When you aren’t traveling “underground,” you pass through barriers of trees or just barriers. When you do see life beyond the barriers, it’s usually during the last ten miles or so into a town or city with a train stop or station, and then the sights are mostly industrial buildings and housing projects. So, it was with our trip from Rome to Bari.
